Bilimsel kaynaklar, karınca türlerinin 28 farklı kategoriye ayrıldığını ancak bunlardan 1 tanesinin mevcudiyetinin sona erdiğini, dolayısıyla mevcut durumda karınca türlerine ilişkin 27 kategori ( genera ) bulunduğunu bildirmektedirler.
